Read This Before You Start A New Online Business

What are the most important things to consider before you venture into a new online business? Is it the technical know-how? Or perhaps it’s the traffic strategies?

In today’s blog, I’ll give you a checklist that you can refer to whenever you want to start a new online business.

1) Is the market easily targetable?

Before you do anything, you need to make sure that the market you are trying to get into is targetable. What I mean is your prospects should belong to a community that you can easily locate. This is important because when your business is launched, you need to know where to look for your customers.

This may seem common sense, but in reality, many netpreneurs believe that their product targets everybody. As a result, they advertise everywhere and have no idea why the traffic doesn’t convert.

2) Is there a problem in the market you’re targeting and does your product address to that problem?

In most cases, a business idea is generated when the founder faces a problem that he fails to find a good solution in the market. If this describes the cause of your business idea, then congratulations, as you’ve found THAT problem.

However, if you have no idea what problem your business is solving, you really have to think of one and sell that idea as a problem. Otherwise, you are going to have a hard time convincing people to buy your product.

3) Is your product unique in the market?

To me, this is the most important point before I take action on any business idea.

If you have studied marketing, you may recall the term USP, which stands for Unique Selling Proposition. A good USP is one that not only provides a solution to the problem in Point 2 but one that is unique.

You don’t have to be Einstein to create a unique product. A product can be unique by simply combining two or more ideas into one, or it can be an idea that exists in some part of the world but not found in your territory or country. Or it can even be a cheaper way of providing the same solution and the low price itself can be the uniqueness.

No one can tell you if one USP is more profitable than another. This is where your vision comes into play.

4) Is there a viral component to your business model?

If you think getting traffic is tough, that’s because there isn’t a viral component to your business model. If all the traffic has to be generated by you personally, it’s just a matter of time before you give up internet marketing.

To truly understand the meaning of viral, look at Facebook. While most people think Facebook is doing the world a favor, by providing a good platform for people to connect, in actual fact, the world is actually doing Facebook a favor, as every Facebook user is a free promoter of Facebook, helping Facebook to expand its user base.

Viral components can include many things, from having an affiliate program to providing viral tools. However, the best form of viral component is a system that can easily convert your users into your affiliates, without them having to intentionally promote your website. This means the more they use your product or service to benefit themselves, the more they promote you!

5) Do you have a traffic retention strategy?

Getting traffic is easy, keeping the traffic is harder, converting the traffic into sales is the hardest. A good traffic retention strategy will help you keep the traffic that comes to your website, so that you not only have more chance to convert the traffic into sales, but also have more people promoting your website, if you’ve done the right thing.

The most common form of traffic retention strategy is getting people to optin by giving away freebies. As I said, this is the most common form but with more and more marketers using such trick, you need to be more innovative than that in order to stand out from the rest.

6) Do you have an automatic sales conversion strategy?

People need to be reminded to buy from you. If you need to do this manually, both you and your prospects will get sick and tired of it. Instead, what you should do is to think of a subtle sales conversion strategy that is always reminding your prospects that there is something better waiting for them.

Imagine a person who needs to get from point A to B everyday. He can either get there on foot or take your taxi. It will be annoying if you were to approach this person everyday. Instead you just have to make sure that he sees you everyday and he knows about your offer. One day, when he sees the value of your service, he will buy.

7) Is the need for your product long-lived?

If you sell something that people will only need to use once, you will have to find a new prospect after every sale. That is tedious.

On the other hand, if your product can service a person for live, like an insurance policy, you are going to have recurring income from every sale you make.

Another way of looking at ‘long-lived’ is are you selling a fad? A fad is something that suddenly bursts into a full buying frenzy and then, just as quickly, fizzle out. If you are selling a fad, you may be making some quick money but such income is not lasting. Soon you will be back to square one and you have to start all over again.

8) Is the operation of your business self-running?

How much time will it take for you to keep that business running? If the running of your business requires a lot involvement from you, it means this business is going to keep you so busy that you may have no time to expand the business or explore other business and investment opportunities.

As a basic principle, you should spend most of your time growing your business or establishing other businesses, not running the business.

Of course, no business is 100% self-running. If most processes can be automated or can easily be outsourced, that business is worth exploring.

Let me give you an example of what I mean by running a business. Say if you run a membership site that provides new video tutorials every month, you will have to spend time preparing the videos. You can outsource, provided that the outsource personnel can do an equally good job, and the business is profitable enough for you to engage that person.

However, there is an interesting twist. If you are indeed in such a situation, you can turn the ‘maintenance work’ into a growth opportunity. For example, you can turn your videos into a MRR (Master Resale Right) product and allow your customers to sell or bundle it with other products. This way, the same videos suddenly become a viral tool that will bring you more traffic. You can also produce videos based on interviews with other marketing gurus. This way, you are growing your affiliate network while at the same time delivering good values to your customers.

9) Is your business building an asset?

Most people do business to make money. But that’s not enough. In addition to making money, you have to make sure that your business is building an asset other than money. An asset can be a collection of websites, which the guru call virtual property, or it can be a network, which can be in the form of a subscriber list or a network of affiliates, or you may be building an infrastructure that you can use for your future businesses.

Looking beyond money and focusing on building assets is the way to ensuring that your online venture is a lasting one. Whether your current business is going to survive tomorrow or not, you know that you are sure to win because the asset that has been built is going to benefit you no matter what.

Everyone wants to know how to generate leads online. Honestly, the answer is everywhere. The key is not HOW but WHAT to do with those leads.

First, let me quickly run through with you how to generate leads online.

1) Advertise

There are lots of ways to advertise online, including PPC, email advertising, banners etc. What’s important in advertising is knowing where to find your prospects and then pay to reach them. It’s as simple as that.

2) Article and video marketing

Article and video marketing are essentially the same. Everyday, millions of people are searching for information, in the form of article or video. Your challenge is to make your article/video available to them, and then lead them to your website.

3) Search engine optimization

I don’t have to explain what is search engine optimization, do I? Get your website found in the search result and you’ll see lots of free traffic to your website. I’ve written lots of articles about it in this blog.

4) Joint venture

This is one of the fastest ways to generate lots of leads within a short time, similar to advertising. But it is risk free, because you usually pay your joint venture partners a commission rather than an upfront fee.

5) Make use of the media

How do you know when the lastest generation of iPhone is out? Is it through Apple’s advertisement, or through the media telling you that people are queuing outside Apple shop? The media is always looking for events with news value. If you can create such events, there is a chance that you can get the media’s attention and have some free publicity.

6) Affiliate marketing

Run an affiliate program and give your affiliates enough reasons to promote your website. The second part is the key. If you simply have an affiliate program, you are likely to fail.

7) Social media marketing

My definition of social media marketing is not about Facebook or Twitter. To me, it is simply an online version of word-of-mouth marketing. People interact, be it through Facebook, Twitter or forums. If you can get people to talk about your product, you will get lots of leads from everywhere. You can either leave it to luck, to plan to make it happen!

The Missing Key – What To Do With Your Leads.

Knowing how to generate leads is not enough, in fact, it is NEVER enough. That’s why many people who spend lots of time and money in leads generation eventually give up.

As I mentioned, the key is in what you do with your leads, not how to get them.

First, you need to give them what they want. Don’t try to sell them. For example, if you want to sell them a business opportunity, give them a report on the step by step of how you or someone else create a million dollar business from scratch. If you want to sell them a software, show them how to use that software and give them a free trial.

Second, get their emails. Typically, you’ll give them what they want WHILE they give you their email address. This is a standard list building process. But it may not be always emails. You can have some online applications that your leads can use free on a regular basis and you can always reach them by posting a banner or an ad on your website. The key here is to retain your new leads, so that you have multiple chance to sell them!

Third, keep providing values. Forget about selling. The thing about humans is they always want more, and they are willing to pay to have more. So your job is to give them more values, some are free, some are charged. Just keep creating and providing more values and you will see takers for your charged values.

Forth, give them enough reasons to talk about you. This is the most important part that decides whether you will have a ‘struggling’ or a ‘thriving’ business. You may have a product that is really good and people are happily paying you to use it. But if all of them are simply using it without telling other people, you will have to work hard to get more leads on your own. On the other hand, if just 1% of your users talk about you in their blogs, Facebook or forums, you will eventually see your leads multiply automatically, and by then, your job is to make sure you continue provide good values to your old and new leads. Sounds good?

As you can see, the key in lead generation is in what you do with the leads, not how to generate those leads. Too many people simply get a turn-key website or start a WordPress blog, and then simply bulldoze their way to get leads, only to wonder why their business is not growing. I’m not saying turn-key website or WordPress blog is not good. They are just tools with standard features. You need to think of how to make them alive, alluring and more importantly, viral.

A lot of people are saying really good things about the site, but are they true?

I decided to write up an honest review of the site, covering what I believe to be its strengths and its weaknesses, just to clear it up once and for all…

In A Nutshell…

A catchy new viral marketing tool, capable of broadcastingm essages directly to people’s desktops. Easy to use, and caters primarily to those who have something they want to promote and are looking for a better way to do it. (Read on for why I didn’t give it 5 stars)

1. Initial Impressions

When I was first introduced to DesktopLightning.com, I wasn’t quite sure exactly what to think. Everyone was saying it was going to be more powerful than e-mail marketing, but this seemed like too bold of a claim.

I signed up anyway, since I usually give things a chance — that’s how I have found the several sites I do really trust and rely on.

The signup process did take about 60 seconds, as advertised, and their software program downloaded and installed in about 30 seconds. No long, tedious install processes here. If you own downloadable software, you might want to take a look at how quick their install process is.

Right after installing the software, it ran immediately, and I was quickly presented with a tool to invite my friends. Within one-click’s access was my Inbox, the tool to send broadcasts, a statistics page, and my favorite, the “Build Your Network” page. I’ll get more into why that’s my favorite page later.

2. Viral Growth

This is where the site really shines, in my opinion. The purpose of a viral marketing site is that you should be able to invite just a few people, and then it will start growing on its own. Many sites claim to work like this, but few actually work as advertised.

I’m not sure if it’s because of their unique concept or the slick implementation, but this site is REALLY viral. Here’s some of the testimonials they got, which I think sum it up pretty well:

“This website is so viral – I received over 100 sign-ups and my network is already 5 levels deep in less than 48 hours.” ~ Rene Keiser

“I invited just a handful of people only a few days ago and I already have 48 members on 5 levels below me. I am going to keep promoting this, but I see it has a life of it’s own now. I couldn’t stop my network from expanding if I wanted to!” ~ David Parton

“I haven’t ever seen a system build a downline so fast. I joined your program just to try something new. Four days later I had a downline of 43 people. This is unbelievable.” ~ Harry Joseph

Although they obviously can’t guarantee results for anyone, the general consesus is that most people who do get those initial few people in are experiencing results similar to these. I give DesktopLightning.com an A+ for spreading like wildfire.

3. Direct-To-Desktop Broadcasts

So, once you have the people in your network from the direct invitations and the viral growth, then it really gets cool. Now is when you get to broadcast whatever message you want directly to their desktops. Gone are the days of sending out emails and wondering if they were received due to spam filters and crowded inboxes.

If you upgrade to their Platinum membership, then you can even get exact statistics on the percentage of your broadcasts that were opened, but the Platinum membership is not the subject of this review.

Here’s how it works — the DesktopLightning.com software is what allows the direct-to-desktop communication to be received. Since everyone in your network will have the DesktopLightning.com application installed, just as you do, this is what allows such smooth and instant communication to occur.

Within one hour of your sending the message, everyone in your network who is online will receive a notification on their desktop that they can click to read your message. Anyone who isn’t online at the time will receive it when they log on next.

I’m sure you can see why this type of communication has been more successful than email as of late, so I won’t get into it too much here. The basic point though is that there’s no way your message can be lost, overlooked, or blocked by any filters.

If you upgrade to their Platinum service you can do things like embed video and sound right into the broadcast, but again, I’ll save the Platinum service for another review.

4. Building Your Network

Most sites out there nowadays don’t really help you build a network of people below you. They just throw you a URL and tell you to run with it. While this works for most advanced people, it’s not somethingthat’s very easy for people who are just starting out.

DesktopLightning.com went really far this time to make sure that everyone has a way to bring people into their network, regardless of skill level. When you click on the “Build Your Network” link from within their application, you’ll be presented with a surprising number of tools to help you build your downline. Everything from banners, to popups, to text ads, to invitation tools, to emails to send out, etc.

Then, they continue to offer something which I haven’t seen on any Internet Marketing site yet — they have a “Starting From Scratch” section, designed specifically for people who have no list and no website with traffic.

If you’re in that position, then you’ll love this section, since they detail specific strategies you can use to promote DesktopLightning.com (or anything for that matter), even if you don’t have anything to start with. Quite a valuable resource.

5. Not For Everyone

With all that said, the only downside to DesktopLightning.com is that it’s not for everyone. Of course, some might see that as an upside, since it’s a more targeted opportunity. Basically, the bottom line is that DesktopLightning.com is a promotional tool. You need to have something you want to promote or advertise before you can really make use of the site.

This is all due to the fact that the basic concept is that you build a viral network of people, and then broadcast something to it. But, this “something” is whatever you want, so you must already have something you’d want to send to a lot of people. If you don’t have something yet, you could start building your network first, and then once you get something to promote you’ll be ready to launch it immediately. If you do have something to promote, that’s when the site really shines.

6. Conclusion

I would recommend this site to anyone who has something to promote or advertise. It definitely works, and your downline will grow extremely fast if you put some energy into getting it started.

The direct-to-desktop broadcasts are a killer app in today’s online climate, where emails barely even get through anymore. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is that it has nothing to offer for people who don’t have anything to promote or advertise yet.

If you want to advertise or promote something to a lot of people in a unique and poweful way, then this site is for you.

At any rate, my general opinion is that since it’s so quick to set up and try, if you have something you want to promote you might as well go check it out. You can always remove it later if you decide you don’t like it.

It’s a prestigious award given out to those in the world of advertising, which is where Seinfeld got his start.

In his brief Thank You speech, he lays down some SERIOUS insights into the psyche of a buyer.

He starts off by saying that he loves advertising because he loves lying. (He’s only half serious here, remember, he’s a comedian!)

That’s where most people are, whether they realize it or not.

And if YOU realize this, it can totally transform your marketing and business.

Paint the picture of what’s possible (It really is if they take action), make them overjoyed, give them the amazing feeling of the purchase.

And as Seinfeld revealed. This alone will make 90% of your customers and list happy.

(This is also by the way why you see serial buyers, they buy how-to products day in and out for the feeling, the experience of “what’s possible”. It’s like crack to them.)

Why to-do lists are useless…

Yep. I said it…

To-do lists alone are WORTHLESS.

Yet, this is how most people try to get things done. They write down all of their “to-dos” for the day,
they look at the HUGE list, get overwhelmed, and get very little if any of it actually done.

To-do lists are ineffective because it should NOT be the end all be all.

It’s STEP 1.

Here’s what you do, according to Cal Newport, one of the most productive guys out there.

Write down your to-do list, then, schedule everything in.

What this does is it FORCES you to see exactly how long it will take to do something, and, how much time
YOU have to do it.

This also works well because in your mind, you’ve committed yourself to actually DOING the things in
that time frame.

So for example:

9:00 Purchase 500 clicks, 100 clicks each from 5 different solo ad vendors. (2 hrs.)

11:00 Check stats and start 3 new ads on FB. ( 1 hr.)

12:00-1:30 Lunch and Exercise.

2:00 Work on new sales letter and offer. (2 hrs.)

4:00 Write and send out valuable email to list. ( 1 hr.)

5:00 Check email, head home to eat dinner with family.

Etc…

Alright, you get the point right?

This is waaaaay more effective than just writing 30 things that pop up in your head and writing it out on a to-do list,
hoping and praying that you at least get a few of the things knocked out.

Scheduling it in to specific times makes it real. It makes you committed to doing it.

And, it makes you confident that’ll you can reasonably get it all done.

Next, you want to set up concrete boundaries, and work from there.

Whatever it is, if you’ve got 1 hour a day to work this business, or 8, you fit everything you need into that
timeframe.

This will force you to say NO more, to weed out doing the non-essential, and just focusing in on the big needle-mover
activities.

This will also allow you to actually have a life and avoid getting burned out!!

Further, don’t just plan out your day, plan out your WEEK. This doesn’t have to take long. Simply spend an hour
Sunday night or early Monday morning and chart out what you want and need to get done.

And finally, focus on doing DEEP WORK, not shallow work.

Checking all emails, making non-important phone calls, looking busy just for the sake of looking busy is all shallow
work.

It’s how most people work at their j-o-b-s.

It’s constantly responding to low value, time consuming things.

You DO NOT want to do this.

Do what counts. Do what makes a difference in your life and the lives of others.

Granted, all this isn’t simple, but having STRUCTURE like this in your business, ironic as it sounds, will give
you more freedom then you’ve ever had before.

This is especially the case if your to-dos isn’t that large in the first place!!

You can accomplish this by partnering up with a business model that’s already proven, running, and willing to do
most things FOR YOU.

Every few days or so, it seems like he’s getting these messages.

Again, usually these sales are made ON HIS BEHALF, just as they are for the other partners of MOBE.

This allows him all the time he wants to travel, fly, and whatever the heck else he wants to do.
